North Branford loaded the bases on two hits and a hit batter in the bottom of the seventh, and Matt Scalia’s sac fly plated the winning run for a 2-1 victory over Haddam-Killingworth on Wednesday.

The Shoreline Conference-leading Thunderbirds, who beat the Cougars 3-1 earlier this season, improved to 10-1. H-K is 11-3.

Jason O’Connor pitched the seventh in relief of starter Adam Virginelli for the win. Blake Kamoen took the loss.

Charlie O’Brien had 2 hits for North Branford. Joey Salafia had 2 hits for H-K.

The Cougars, who play Morgan on Saturday, were coming off a 9-1 win over Old Saybrook on Tuesday. Matt Shea got the win in that one, scattering 4 hits and striking out 13.

In other games Wednesday:

Morgan 5, Valley Regional/Westbrook 1: Ryan Donadio went the distance for the Huskies (10-5) and Wyatt Luke was 4 for 4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Sean Green and Ross Treubig had 2 hits each in Morgan’s 11-hit attack. Donadio scattered 9 hits, allowed an earned run, walked 3 and fanned 5. Kyle Leandri led the Warriors (5-7) with 3 hits and Braden Karcich was 2 for 4 with an RBI. Tanyon Champagne took the loss.

Fitch 8, Old Lyme 7: Rowen Meisner led the Wildcats’ offense with 3 hits and 3 RBI. Old Lyme had 10 hits in the out-of-conference game. Jack Porter was 2 for 4 with an RBI and run scored, and Aidan Carpentino also had 2 hits.


Mercy 10, Jonathan Law 2: Skylar Swanson was 3 for 5, falling a triple short of hitting for the cycle, and drove in 4 runs to power the Tigers to their 11th win of the season. Maggie Mathews singled, doubled twice and drove in 2 runs and Pip Karch struck out 6 for the win. Lily Stankevich had 2 hits for Law.

Middletown 8, Avon 1: Angelina Vartuli pitched a 3-hitter and struck out 16 for the Blue Dragons, who improved to 10-2. Caitlyn Burgess had 2 hits and scored twice for Middletown. Madison Jette had an RBI single for Avon (2-7).

Old Lyme 19, Old Saybrook/Westbrook 1: Anna Eichholz, Grace Osborne and Ava Roth all had 3 hits to power the Wildcats (10-1). Sybil Neary had 2 hits, including a 3-run home run, and 5 RBI. Emma Bayor had 2 hits and drove in 5 runs. Roth scored 5 runs and drove in 2. Bayor was the winning pitcher and is 9-0 on the season.
