The Coginchaug baseball team Monday won for the first time this season and first time for coach Martin Magzag.

The Blue Devils prevailed 5-1 over Old Lyme in Durham as senior right-hander Henry Bugai III scattered 2 hits and allowed an unearned in pitching a complete game.

Bugai struck out 4 and walked 2 in his 86-pitch outing and Coginchaug ended an 11-game losing streak.

“We were very happy for the boys,” said Magzag, who came to Coginchaug from Portland, where he assisted head coach Rick Borg.

Sophomore Jordan Hawksley drove in a run with a second-inning double, giving the Blue Devils the early lead. Old Lyme (5-6) tied the game in the fifth on a sacrifice bly by Aidan Carpentino.

Coginchaug pulled ahead in its half of the fifth on a sac fly by Bugai. Silas Barrett followed with a walk and scored on a triple by Preston Mennone (2 for 3, 1 run).

Rowen Meisner and Giovanni Winters had Old Lyme’s hits.

Haddam-Killingworth 11, Cromwell 1: The Cougars scored 5 times in the first inning in getting started toward their 10th win in 12 games. Matt Shea had 4 hits and drove in 2 runs to lead H-K’s 10-hit attack. Luke Mauri chipped in 2 hits and scored 3 runs, while Max Selmer tripled in the fifth to drive in 2 more runs. Todd Butler scattered 2 hits and
struck out 8 over 6 innings for his third win of the season. Evan Ucol drove in the lone Cromwell (5-7) run in the third. Conner Slifer took the loss.

East Hampton 8, Valley Regional/Westbrook 1: Alex Zimmerman and Blake Kapernaros combined on a 4-hitter as the Bellringers (6-4) avenged a 14-0 loss to the Warriors on April 1. Baden Plante was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI for East Hampton, Austin Bigelow had 2 hits, while Jayson Beal and Jonathan Crowley drove in 2 runs apiece. Tanyon Champagne drove in the Warriors’ lone run.

Portland 12, Hale-Ray 0: Bryce Walsh had 3 hits and drove in 2 runs for the Highlanders. Ryan LaPila contributed 2 hits, including a double, and 3 RBI. Josh Hanna pitched 5 innings for the win. Portland is 5-6.


Mercy 8, Daniel Hand 5: Freshman Julia Lane had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, in 4 at-bats to lead the Tigers to their 10th win of the season under new coach Kas Hoag. Katelyn Bailey homered for Mercy. Pip Karch was the winning pitcher, allowed 5 earned runs and striking out 2. Danielle Phelan doubled and drove in 3 runs for Hand.

H-K 11, Cromwell 1: Hannah Reilly’s powered the Cougars (10-2) with 2 triples, a single, sac fly and 3 runs. Cheyenne LaTouche notched her 100th career hit, a single in the fifth inning on her 18th birthday. Emma Giaccone won her 8th game of the season, striking out 8 while yielding only 4 hits and one walk. Emma Ribera had a RBI single for Cromwell (5-6).

Old Lyme 13, Coginchaug 1: Winning pitcher Emma Bayor (3 for 4, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Ava Roth (3 for 3, 3 runs, 3 extra-base hits), Kaylyn Vernan (3 for 5, RBI) and Sybil Neary (3 for 5, 3-run home run, 4 RBI, 2 runs) all had huge days at the plate for the Wildcats (9-1, 8-0 Shoreline).
