Organizers for the Thomas J. Serra Memorial Golf Tournament have limited remaining spots for four-person teams for the July 12 event at Portland Golf Course. The event has a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.

Proceeds from the tournament support a scholarship fund, from which an annual award is given to one senior from Middletown High School, Mercy, Xavier and Vinal Regional Technical High School. Many non-profit organizations, such as The First Tee of Connecticut, the Hospital for Special Care and the Northern Middlesex YMCA, also benefit.

Serra, who died in 2019 at age 71, was a strong advocate for athletes and teams in Middletown as a coach, athletic director and principal at Vinal Tech, and as a city commission member, town councilman, mayor and president of the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame. In ways big or small, he made sure city athletes received their due.

The entry fee is $175 per golfer and registration runs from 8 to 9:15 a.m. The entry fee includes cart rental, lunch, buffet dinner, tournament prizes and raffle prizes.
