For the third year in a row, the Thomas J. Serra Memorial Golf Tournament will be held at Portland Golf Course.
This year’s tournament, a four-person team scramble, is scheduled for July 15 with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. The tournament aids the Thomas J. Serra Memorial Scholarship, whose funds are distributed for both Middletown High School and Vinal Regional Technical High School students, and non-profit organizations such as The First Tee of Connecticut, the Hospital for Special Care and the Northern Middlesex YMCA.
The entry fee is $150 per golfer for the 144-player field. Registration runs from 8 to 9:15 a.m. The fee includes cart rental, lunch, buffet dinner, tournament prizes and raffle prizes.
Serra, who died in 2019 at age 71, was a strong advocate for athletes and teams in Middletown as a coach, athletic director and principal at Vinal Tech, and as a city commission member, town councilman, mayor and president of the Middletown Sports Hall of Fame. In ways big or small, he made sure city athletes got their due.
Serra’s sons, Chris and Jason, are organizers of the tournament. Sponsorships also can be purchased. The form at right can be completed and returned with a check payable to “Thomas J. Serra Scholarship” and mailed to Chris Serra, 17 Raymond Road, Glastonbury, CT, 06073.
