The holiday break was a time for reminiscing as the 2021 state champion Coginchaug baseball and softball teams got together one more time to receive their championship rings.

Coach Mark Basil’s Blue Devils baseball team joined the 1972 squad as the only state champs in school history. On June 11 at Palmer Field, Coginchaug defeated St. Paul 8-0 to cap a sensational 22-3 season.

Coginchaug won three of its five tournament games by shutout and outscored its opponents 56-5. Left-hander Kolby Pascarelli (UConn) got the win over St. Paul and Alex Mach (UConn-Avery Point) recorded the final out.

Coach Steve DeMartino’s softball team had an equally dominant run in their Class S tournament. With many from the baseball team looking on the next day, Coginchaug avenged a loss in the 2019 Class S final with a 14-2 rout of Somers at Biondi Field in West Haven.

Amalia DeMartino was 16 for 18 at the plate in four tournament games and the Boothroyd tandem of pitcher Kelly and catcher Dana were on the same page throughout.

Coginchaug’s championship double in the sports was the first since Holy Cross in 2017. The last public school to do it was Oxford in 2013.
