Old Lyme capped its undefeated season with its first state championship by defeating Litchfield 5-2 in the Class S final on Thursday.
The top-seeded Wildcats lost at Nos. 1 and 2 singles but swept the rest to post a 20-0 season, producing the Shoreline Conference’s first state championship in girls tennis since Westbrook won the 2012 Class S crown.
“Throughout the season the girls exceeded all expectations,” Wildcats coach Lauren Rahr said. “Coming from various levels and backgrounds, the girls left it all on the court. Our motto is to ‘go out there and play tennis that you will be proud of.’ Each and every player was able to do that when it mattered the most, and I couldn’t be more proud of the amazing group of girls and tennis players that they are.”
Doubles players Lauren Wallace and Sophia Ortoleva played their final matches as seniors. The remainder of Rahr’s lineup in the championship match are all underclassmen, making Old Lyme a strong contender to repeat in 2022.
The team defeated No. 16 Housatonic (first round), Shoreline opponent Morgan (eight seed, quarterfinals) and No. 4 Holy Cross (semifinals) by 7-0 scores. Old Lyme won the Shoreline championship and lost only five sets during the regular season. The final was played at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club of Manchester.
No. 1 doubles team Lauren Wallace and Alexis Fenton will compete in the State Invitational, which starts Saturday with opening-round matches at the Middletown/Wesleyan University courts.
