Coginchaug defeated Old Saybrook 172-193 in a Shoreline Conference golf match Tuesday as junior Colin Murphy medaled with a 3-over-par 38 at Fenwick Golf Course.

Murphy has been medalist in five of six matches this season — three times at Lyman Orchards and at TPC River Highlanders in Cromwell.

“I got off to a rough start bogeying the first three holes, but I pulled it together by shooting even on the last six holes,” Murphy said. “Today I was driving the ball well and hitting some wedges in close, but I couldn’t make any putts.”

Portland and Coginchaug are among a group of contenders for the Shoreline championship later this month. The Highlanders have been led by freshman Luke Stennett and senior Mason Piersall.

“The Shoreline has a lot of good competition,” Murphy said. “Portland is one of the better teams. They have a lot of young talent and are very consistent. But like I told our team, if we keep putting in the work on the driving range and on the course, we can definitely be one of the better teams in the conference.”

Coginchaug is scheduled to host Old Lyme at Lyman Orchards on Thursday. Old Saybrook and Hale-Ray meet Thursday at Black Birch in Moodus.
