Freshman Bella Richwine belted two home runs and sophomore left-hander Kaleigh Bodak notched her third victory of the season, leading Haddam-Killingworth to a 7-1 Shoreline Conference softball win over Old Lyme.
Richwine drove in four runs and scored three times as part of a three-hit day. Her second homer, a three-run blast in the sixth inning, put the game out of reach. The Cougars collected14 hits.
“They hit the ball very well today,” said Old Lyme coach Tim Gavin. “Bella Richwine was the difference today.”
The Cougars extended their season-opening winning streak to six games. Old Lyme fell to 2-2.
Trailing 4-1, the Wildcats had the bases loaded with one out in the fourth but struck out twice, ending their threat.
“To me, that was the turning point of the game,” Gavin said. “We need to get a few clutch hits in that inning.”
Ivy McNiel, another of H-K’s vaunted freshmen players, continued her hot hitting with three hits and two RBIs. Bodak allowed one run on fourth hits without any walks.
Old Lyme’s Victoria Gage took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on 14 hits. Emma Bayor had a hit and drove in the Wildcats’ only run. Paige Kolesnik had a triple and scored, and Kassidy Standish doubled.
Up next on Friday: H-K hosts Hale-Ray (0-2) at 4pm. Old Lyme meets Morgan (2-3) at 3pm.
