Morgan Secures 2 Seed In Shoreline, Old Lyme Falls To 4

East Hampton held Old Lyme to three fourth-quarter points and pulled away for a 45-30 girls basketball victory over the Wildcats on Monday, injecting some clarity into the Shoreline Conference tournament seedings.

The unbeaten Bellringers’ 11th win was marred by an injury to senior forward Angela Mercaldi, who went down with an apparent leg injury near the team’s bench with less than a minute left. Mercaldi, who’s missed a few games this season, had to be helped from the court.

Mya Field and Hannah Barrientos led East Hampton with 11 points each in the team’s 18th straight win over a Shoreline opponent dating to last season. Mercaldi had 8 points. Emily DeRoehn led Old Lyme with 9 points.

Old Lyme (8-3) was in the running for the No. 2 seed in the Shoreline tournament, but fell to the fourth spot after its second straight loss.

Morgan (9-2) turned back Portland and Cromwell (9-2) took care of Hale-Ray on Monday, with the No. 2 seed going to the Huskies by virtue of their early-season victory over the Panthers.

The top four will host tournament quarterfinal-round games on Monday. All seeds and pairings will be finalized after Tuesday’s Valley Regional/Hale-Ray game. The tournament starts Saturday with four first-round games.
