Middletown Falls Short In OT Loss To No. 3 Newington

Middletown High’s girls basketball team came up just short in its bid to upset No. 3-ranked Newington on Tuesday, falling in overtime 48-44 on Tuesday night at LaBella-Sullivan Gymnasium.

Middletown junior Tyah Pettaway scored a game-high 29 points for the Blue Dragons.

“My team played their absolute hearts out for 36 minutes and went toe-to-toe with the third-ranked team in the state,” Middletown coach Rob Smernoff said. “Newington is an exceptional 3 point shooting team and we were able to limit their outside looks very well.”

Newington was denied even one 3-point field goal, but did enough to remain unbeaten through six games in the Central Connecticut Conference.

The Blue Dragons suffered their first loss after a 5-0 start. Kya Mayo contributed 10 points for Middletown.

“At the end of the day it was two really good teams playing at a high level,” Smernoff said. “Tyah and Kya clearly were very good on the offensive end. We will look to make a few adjustments knowing we play Newington in eight days, which will again be a great challenge. We clearly showed we can play with the best teams in the CCC and the state.”

Lilley Ferguson led Newington with 18 points.

Middletown is off until March 9 when they play Bulkeley/SMSA on the road at 5:30 p.m.
