Lasky, Doering Double Up In Highlanders’ Class S Victory

Sam Lasky’s 17 points led three Portland players in double figures as the Highlanders defeated Somers 48-33 in the first round of the Class S girls basketball tournament Tuesday night.

Lasky also had 11 rebounds and Olivia Doering also posted a double-double — 10 points and 13 boards.

Host Portland, the No. 15 seed, pulled away for good in the fourth against their 18th-seeded opponent. Carly Graves added 14 points for the Highlanders.

Devon Dalessio led Somers with 9 points.

Portland will hit the road in the second round to play No. 2 Putnam (6:30pm tip).

Vanessa Stolstajner scored a game-high 27 points on 10-of-20 shooting to lead Cromwell to an easy Class M tournament first-round win over visiting Lyman Memorial on Monday night.

Stolstajner had four 3-points for the ninth-seeded and defending Class M champion Panthers, who advance to play at No. 8 Woodland in the second round on Thursday (6:30pm tip).

Sadie Budzik had 8 points, 5 assists and 4 steals for the Panthers, Adela Cecunjanin had 11 rebounds and Khaya Skene had 9 boards.

Sidney Pankowski led No. 24 Lyman Memorial with 17 points.

Coginchaug will play at No. 7 Ansonia in the second round on Thursday at 6:30pm.
