Comeback Cougs: H-K Upsets St. Paul, Volpicelli Scores 24

HIGGANUM – With its 3-point arsenal finding a lot of net, Haddam-Killingworth played the role of comeback kids Monday night.

Senior Giacomo Volpicelli sank six of H-K’s 10 3-pointers and the Cougars overcame an 11-point deficit in the third quarter to upset St. Paul Catholic 63-62 at Patsy Kamercia Field House.

H-K opened with a 20-point first quarter to lead by two, but managed only five points in the second and fell behind 36-25 early in the third quarter before storming back.

Volpicelli hit four clutch free throws late in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 24 points. H-K was ahead by four before St. Paul hit a 3-pointer add the buzzer

“The kid showed a lot of resilience to come back against a very good St. Paul team,” Cougars coach Jim Abbott said.

Freshman guard Mason Gorham hit three 3-pointers and finished with 19 points as H-K (5-9) remained in contention for a state tournament berth. The Cougars need to win three of their final six games to grab a berth in Division V.

Junior forward Jimmy McGoey added 14 points and 8 rebounds for H-K and junior Alec Erskine dished out 10 assists.

A.J. Brooks led St. Paul (9-6) with 22 points.

DURHAM – Coginchaug won its sixth consecutive game, riding the scoring of Jessica Berens (14 points) and Kerry Turecek (11) past H-K in a Shoreline Conference game.

Sam Mancini added 9 points for the Blue Devils and Amalia DeMartino and Molly Shields scored 8 apiece.

Peyton Yazmer led the Cougars with 8 points.
