Middletown Crushes Platt; Mercy Holds Off Holy Cross

MIDDLETOWN – Defense was Middletown’s forte on Monday night as the Blue Dragons held Platt to 11 first-half points and cruised to their first win of the season, 48-26 in a CCC South girls basketball game.

Tyah Pettaway and Ayanna McCalla scored 15 points apiece and Middletown held the Panthers to just five field goals in each half to win going away.

“We were terrific defensively,” Blue Dragons coach Rob Smernoff said. “They all committed to the defensive end and our press was very good.

“Tyah and Ayanna really led us offensively and Deziar (Rose-Daniels) really kept us under control as our point guard.”

Ja’lexia West led Platt with 10 points.

MIDDLETOWN – Abby Bradbury hit four 3-pointrs and scored a game-high 20 points and Mercy held off Holy Cross in the fourth quarter to record its first win of the season.

Middletown 57, Platt 48

MERIDEN – Donte Pope scored a team-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Middletown got back into the win column with its CCC South victory over host Platt.

Elijah Wilborn had 9 points and 12 rebounds for the Blue Dragons, who were coming off Saturday’s five-point loss to No. 1 Windsor. Jonathan Nkonoki contributed 11 points and Kenny Fountain had 5 points and 5 assists.

Platt’s Elijah Wright led all scorers with 24 points, shooting 13 of 16 from the free-throw line.

DEEP RIVER – Chris Sparaco had 12 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Cade Ensinger finished with 11 points and 8 boards, helping Valley win its season opener.

The Warriors also received solid all-around performances from Jeremy Arnum (14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocked shots and 2 steals) and Gavin Grabowski (4 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals).

Valley will meet Xavier on the first night of the Arthur Kohs Christmas Tournament, Thursday at 7:15 p.m. in Middletown.
